October 3, 2008, Newsletter Issue #90: Breast Reduction Surgery and Men

Tip of the Week

Breast reduction for men is becoming an increasingly popular procedure. Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons compiles statistical data regarding breast procedures. There was a 17 percent increase from 2004 to 2005 in the number of male patients opting for a breast reduction procedure.

Gynecomastia refers to an excessive amount of breast tissue, usually in the form of fat. This is very common in adolescent boys, but for some, the condition persists into adulthood and can become a persistent source of embarrassment. The male may be apprehensive about wearing certain types of clothing and be embarrassed to go swimming because he may not want to take off his shirt in public. Fortunately, there is a breast reduction procedure for men which can help to provide the patient with a more masculine appearance. The most common type of breast reduction procedure for men involves the use of a liposuction on the breasts to eliminate excess fatty tissue. Additionally, the remaining breast tissue is reshaped to create a more masculine appearance. If there is a significant amount of tissue removed and the skin is not elastic enough to conform to the new size and shape, a breast lift procedure may be required. This procedure will remove any excess skin and create a more firm appearance.
