What are the causes of gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia Causes

There are a number of different causes for gynecomastia ranging from the onset of puberty to obesity and to improperly functioning organs. Some of the most common causes of gynecomastia include puberty, steroid abuse, obesity, tumors, genetic disorders, liver disease, use of certain medications, Klinefelter Syndrome, Gilbert's Syndrome and aging. The treatment plan which will be most effective for treating gynecomastia will depend on the cause of the condition.

In the case of Klinefelter Syndrome the patient has an extra X chromosome. This often contributes to gynecomastia, as well as infertility. Gilbert's Syndrome is considered to be a relatively mild condition in which the liver is not functioning properly. In this condition, the liver does not process bilirubin properly. As a result, the blood may show elevated levels of this substance. While serious health consequences typically do not stem from Gilbert's Syndrome, it can contribute to gynecomastia. In the case of patients who suffer from one of the above mentioned syndromes, treatment of the condition may alleviate the gynecomastia.
